Ché Avery was the middle child of five siblings, his parents had struggled greatly to work themselves out of near poverty in their early lives. Ché’s father Lloyd Sr. had built himself his own repair business and his mother Linda fought her way through discriminatory hiring practices to become a senior accounting clerk at their local bank.

The Avery’s focus was to have their children succeed and to provide better opportunities than they had growing up on the streets, free from the ballasts of street and gang influences.

The Averys spent a lot of time with all of their children in this effort, emphasizing Christian values and good behavior. They expected academic success from all of their children. Healthy outlets, such as family outings to go fishing or hunting, provided a brief respite from city life.

Swimming, gymnastics, and little league baseball were among the extracurricular activities available to the Avery children during the week. The Averys even had a pool built outside their house to keep their children off the streets.

“We were silver spoon kids,” Ché recalled as an adult. We were never in need of anything.” Ché’s upbringing appears to have provided him with the environment and tools he requires to succeed. Nonetheless, he would become one of the incredibly rare individuals to reject privileged family life in favor of hardcore gang involvement and crime.

Ché Avery grew up in the Los Angeles suburb of Windsor Hills, and his childhood seemed idyllic. Windsor Hills, with its palm-tree-lined streets and bungalow houses, was a decidedly middle-class neighborhood. But there was a sinister shadow lurking around the corner.

Windsor Hills, like many inner-city neighborhoods, was bordered by the gang-infested divisions of Inglewood and South L.A. This closeness to gang life would be Ché Avery and his brother and Lloyd Avery II’s undoing. As a defendant in court, Ché later stated, “the family love was always there.” “I just had a strange attraction to the streets.”

Ché’s downward spiral began at the age of 17 with what appeared to be a reasonable act of parenting. Ché’s parents would enroll him in a bus program, preventing him from attending Crenshaw High, where he would have been mixed in with the locals of ganglands from Inglewood and South Los Angeles. Instead, Ché’s parents enrolled him in Beverly Hills High School, a predominantly White school that catered to Los Angeles’ more affluent suburbs. Nonetheless, Ché would have to take the public bus from his house through some of L.A.’s worst ghettos to get to Beverly Hills High.

By the time Ché Avery was 17, rap and its pop status had exploded, and he, like many inner-city Los Angeles youths, had developed a taste for wearing black Raider hats, baggy sweatshirts, and khakis. This style of clothing was intended to imitate the Rap artists he listened to, but it was also the perennial uniform of LA gang culture.

Ché Avery’s parents would normally disapprove of the attire and its connotations but as Lloyd Sr. said “A friend of mine made his son look (dress) non-gang, and somebody stabbed him on the bus,” “Somebody sharpened up a screwdriver, put a point on it, and stabbed him, paralyzed him a little while. That taught me something… I told Ché whatever he needed to do to get from point A to point B, you do that.”

Ché ‘s fashion sense made him a standout figure at Beverly Hills High, where he was an honor student with a 3.6 grade-point average, but his outward appearance gave the impression that he was a gang member. “All these little Caucasian kids… thought I was the stereotypical gang banger they’d seen on TV,” Ché would recall later. They simply adored it.”

Ché Avery’s reputation grew not only at school but also on the streets, as he began to play up the role. Ché began to hang out and party with cliques from his neighboring neighborhoods of Inglewood and South Los Angeles, many of which had gang affiliations.

Despite this, Ché Avery excelled in his studies to the point where he was accepted to the prestigious universities of UCLA and UC Berkeley after graduation. However, Ché became intimidated by the prospect of attending university and obtaining a much-needed scholarship and financial support. As a backup plan, Ché decided to decline his acceptance to a university in order to stay close to home and attend a trade school like his father. It was his decision to remain in his familiar surroundings that exacerbated the situation.

Ché Avery’s imitation of gang life into the real world. “I was living a kind of double life. At home… I was an ideal son. I looked up to my Dad. Then, as soon as my father turned his back, I’d be out doing things he couldn’t have imagined.”

In order to solidify his image, Ché Avery would eventually form his own clique which he named the DGF “Don’t Give a Fuck” Crew. As Ché himself explained, even this clique would not be (involved in regular gang activities) of actual gang involvement, “(We) don’t sell the dope, don’t sling the guns” in the way a gang does, might steal a few things… might have a few guns,” “But they mostly have parties, chase girls.” But Ché was consciously building his reputation hardened street thug.

Ché deliberately set his sights on membership and status within elite gang circles. This decision led him to his local chapter of the Rollin’ Sixty’s Crips a subdivision of the Westside Crips criminal network, one of the most violent gangs in the United States at the time. In 1990 Ché Avery made inroads with the Rollin’ 60s and his sustained involvement put him on a path to full initiation.

Ché Avery started carrying a.22-caliber revolver with him at all times. While driving drunk, Ché would look for opportunistic crimes to commit with his sidearm. This would quickly escalate into a full-fledged crime spree of armed robberies primarily targeting jewelry and jackets.

Ché would later claim that he committed these crimes out of rage and humiliation at the system for allowing the public murders of his close friends to go unsolved. Ché would give away the majority of his robbery proceeds while continuing his terrifying string of armed robberies.

“The money, the material things, didn’t give me as much satisfaction as seeing people scared,” Ché would claim in court. “I wanted to see somebody else feel the same pain and frustration that I was feeling.”

Ché Avery’s criminal career would finally catch up with him in 1991 after a failed robbery resulted in Avery’s arrest. He was quickly apprehended and linked to two previous criminal incidents. He was imprisoned for seven months before pleading guilty to all nine felony charges of armed robbery. During his sentencing, Court Judge Charles E. Horan struggled to comprehend how gang life could have such an impact on a teen of such intelligence and promise.

Judge Horan would ask how “a kid who is not in any real way disadvantaged, a kid who has not been abused, beaten, molested, a kid who has been taken to school by his parents, who’s been clothed, fed and loved and taken to church… all of a sudden, at age 19 or 20, decides that the family values or law is of less importance to him than gang values.” Ché Avery could offer no explanation except the attraction of street life.

Ché would reflect on the events that led to his incarceration during his time in detention awaiting trial. Frequent visits from his parents helped Ché see the futility of gang life, a path that only led to two outcomes: prison or death.

Ché Avery swore off the ways of street life and criminality as quickly as he adopted them. Ché Avery would make an on-the-record denunciation of his own gang culture and beg forgiveness from his parents, who were still there for him during this most difficult time in his life.

He hadn’t counted on his younger brother Lloyd Avery II joining him in the downward spiral of gang life, crime, and murder. “When I went to jail, Lloyd was a goody-two-shoes; by the time I got out, he already had a case,” Ché Avery explained.
